Epigrafik Josef Dobiáš = The Epigrapher Josef Dobiáš
To chci
With his epigraph studies, Josef Dobiáš (1888-1972) became the founder of Czech research into Latin epigraphy on a European level, as is testifi ed to by his foreign language contributions on this theme and his regular participation in international congresses published in the later congress proceedings. Arguably his most impressive eff orts in this area of
his scholarly work, were focused on the Trenčín inscription, at the time the only Latin record from the Roman period in Czechoslovakia, preserved in situ. Testimonies to Dobiáš’s eff orts to accurately transliterate the inscription and interpret the text with an explanation of the wider historical circumstances can be seen in particular in his rich correspondence with Professor Eisner. Dobiáš’s contributions on the Trenčín inscription and the Zana one in Africa still remain the most detailed existing work dedicated to this in Czech scholarly literature on the Roman period and a theme of much interest. Dobiáš was also a respected representative of Czechoslovak scholarship at renowned international gatherings of researchers (not only) of ancient history. His participation in congresses is testifi ed to by the remarkable range of his scholarly activity, having lectured on themes from archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics, and historical topography. He was primarily interested, through his contributions, in informing the foreign audience about the results of new research into the Roman period within the territory of Czechoslovakia, which he greatly enhanced through his scholarly activity. Dobiáš’s papers, including epigraph contributions, were regularly published in conference proceedings.
